Charities Going Mobile

Over the past few months, charities are getting more attention from supporters due to the easier access to read and maneuver their websites on a smartphone. Before the redesign, over 90 percent of people who visit their sites on a smartphone, left after viewing one page. Now only 5 percent do as the redesign makes it easier to view and navigate the site. When you create a mobile site designed specifically for smartphones and small tablets, you are increasing the way in which the information about your organization is getting to your supporters and potential donors.

People wonder about the size of a screen on a mobile device and how their information is communicated. There is what is known as responsive design that allows a website to display material in different ways based on the size of the viewer’s screen. For instance, a site might appear as a single column or hide some content when viewed on a smartphone but have a two or three column layout when viewed on a desktop computer or a large tablet.

A growing number of charities are choosing responsive design, despite its greater complexity and higher price tag. With the introduction of tablets in varied sizes and mobile phones with larger screens, the responsive-design layout can create a website that accommodates desk top devices as well as any and all mobile handheld devices.

I believe that the information that is communicated onto a small screen will create simplicity and a level of sophistication that will promote conversations that are precise and with fluidity. I also think that starting on a smaller screen is time effective rather than start with a giant screen and then have to rid things for mobile.
